The final matchday of World Cup 2026 Group E is here, and while Germany have already booked their place in the knockout rounds, three teams are still fighting for survival heading into today’s simultaneous 4 p.m. ET kickoffs.
Ivory Coast face CuraƧao at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, while Ecuador take on Germany at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The drama is very much alive and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The Current Standings
Germany lead Group E after a dominant run of results. They hammered CuraƧao 7-1 on the opening matchday before coming from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1. Ecuador and CuraƧao played out a 0-0 draw in their second game, while Ivory Coast’s only win came in the opener a 1-0 victory over Ecuador.
Heading into Matchday 3, the standings look like this:
- Germany – 6 points (qualified, first place)
- Ivory Coast – 3 points
- Ecuador – 1 point
- CuraƧao – 1 point
Germany – Already Through
Germany have secured top spot in Group E and will not be involved in any final-day drama. Julian Nagelsmann’s side are now aiming to win all three group games, which would only be the third time in their history they’ve achieved that feat, after 1970 and 2006. Remarkably, this will be their first time in the knockout stages since they won the tournament in 2014, having been dramatically eliminated on the final day of the group phase in both 2018 and 2022.

Ivory Coast – In the Driver’s Seat
Ivory Coast are in the most comfortable position of the three remaining sides, and they largely control their own fate.
The team will advance with a win or a draw. A draw keeps them through as long as Ecuador doesn’t beat Germany by two or more goals. A win or draw over CuraƧao will secure second place in Group E, boosted by the fact they won their head-to-head game against Ecuador.
In short: the 2024 AFCON champions simply need to avoid losing to advance. Based on what they’ve shown so far, no one will relish having to face them in the knockout rounds.
Ecuador – Fighting for Their Lives
Many tipped Ecuador to be dark horses this summer, but after two disappointing results, they are fighting for their survival. La Selección’s first game against Ivory Coast could have gone either way they hit the crossbar three times yet they were unlucky to lose. Then they somehow failed to beat CuraƧao in their second match.
Ecuador now need a result against the group winners. Ecuador advance with a win, provided CuraƧao also beat Ivory Coast. In that scenario, Ecuador must win the head-to-head tiebreaker with CuraƧao they currently hold the advantage on goal difference (Ecuador -1, CuraƧao -6). An Ecuador draw or loss would probably not be enough, though it would ultimately depend on the third-place standings across all groups.
CuraƧao – The Miracle Chasers
Nobody expected much from CuraƧao after they were demolished 7-1 by Germany in their opening game in Houston the worst possible start to a World Cup debut. But Livano Comenencia’s equalizer that day at least provided a moment to savour, and in their second game, the World Cup’s smallest-ever nation picked up their first-ever World Cup point. Veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room was the hero in Kansas City, producing 15 saves as Dick Advocaat’s team held Ecuador to a goalless draw at Arrowhead Stadium equalling the 90-minute World Cup record for saves.
Now, a historic comeback is theoretically still possible.
CuraƧao need to beat Ivory Coast while also having Ecuador lose or draw against Germany to secure an automatic berth in the knockout round. If both CuraƧao and Ecuador win, CuraƧao could still advance based on goal differential tiebreakers among the best third-place teams though their current goal difference of -6 makes that an incredibly steep mountain to climb.
The Scenarios at a Glance
- Ivory Coast advance if: They win OR draw (unless Ecuador beat Germany by 2+ goals)
- Ecuador advance if: They beat Germany AND CuraƧao beat Ivory Coast
- CuraƧao advance if: They beat Ivory Coast AND Ecuador fail to win or, if both win, they outperform Ecuador in the third-place standings on goal difference
What’s at Stake in the Knockouts
The winner of Group E will advance to face the third-placed team from Group A, B, C, D, or F. The runner-up will face the runner-up of Group I. Germany are already preparing for their round of 32 tie, leaving Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and CuraƧao to settle the rest.
Today’s 4 p.m. ET simultaneous kickoffs promise genuine tension. Ivory Coast have the simplest path. Ecuador need a minor miracle against the four-time world champions. And CuraƧao? They’ll need history to bend entirely in their favour but after what Eloy Room did against Ecuador, nobody is writing them off entirely.
