Since the inception of the Nigerian Premier League in 1972 with only six teams, 20 different teams have lifted the won the country’s top prize.

Rangers International of Enugu have dominated the league over the years with 6 league wins closely followed by Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri (Now Heartland FC) and Enyimba of Aba who have both won it on 5 different occasions, including 4 consecutive titles won by Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri between 1987-1990 the only team to have ever achieved such fit in the history of the League.

The League recently changed its name to now be called the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)
