How To Publish a WordPress Article Using Your Phone

Step 1: Preparing Your Article
The first thing you need to do is to prepare your article in a Google Doc.
Step 2: Navigating the Dashboard
After copying the article, the next step is to get into WordPress.
To do that, you have to open Habanaija.com, then click on the icon (that looks like a speedometer) as shown in the image below.
When you do that, several options will pop-up and all you need to do is select DASHBOARD.
This will take you to the WordPress Dashboard as shown below.
The next thing to do is:
- Click on the 3 horizontal stripes on the top left corner.
- Click on Posts
- Then Click on Add Post
Step 3: Using Default Editor
After carrying out Step 2, you’ll progress to a page where you can type or paste your article.
But, when the page comes up, the first thing you have to do is select “Use Default Editor”.
After doing that, the page will be completely open for you to work on as shown in the image below.
When you click on Add Title, you’ll be able to type the title of your article in that block.
Also, when you click on Type / to choose a block, you can begin to type or paste your article into that block.
In the image below, you can see that the title of the article has been inserted and also the body of the article.
Then you can begin to adjust some things that need to be adjusted. Example is adding the right HEADING to the sub-topics in your article.
Here is a quick tip when it comes to heading. Your title is automatically HEADING 1 (H1), and that is going to be the only H1 you will have in your article.
Meaning, you can only have one H1 in your article and that is your title. The remaining headers vary from H2-H6.
Step 4: Adding Image into your Article
You don’t want to have an article where readers will get bored all because you didn’t attach any image to it, so this is how you add images to your article.
- Firstly, you create a new block in the position where you want to add the image. To create a new block, all you need to do is click on the Enter key on your keyboard, and the new block will be added just as you see it in the image below.
- Now that you have inserted a new block, click on the “+” icon.
- When you do that, you’ll have options to add various things into your new block, but we will select either Image or Gallery, since we plan on adding images to the block.
- Either you click Image or Gallery, you will have two options. Option 1 is to UPLOAD, this means that you will be selecting image straight from your phone’s gallery.
- The Second option is MEDIA LIBRARY. This library has every image that has been used on HabaNaija.
Which means that if you had chosen to upload, then you can see that image in the media library later because you have used it.
The image has been selected and it is now present in the body of the article.
If you feel as though you need to insert more images, all you have to do is repeat step 4 again.
Step 5: Adding Featured Image
Every article needs a Featured Image, so let’s see how to post a Featured Image.
Click on the SETTINGS ICON as indicated in the image.
The next step is to:
- Click on POST
- Click on SET FEATURED IMAGE
When you click on SET FEATURED IMAGE, you will have the option to Upload or use Media Library, just as it is in step 4.
Select your desired image, then click on Set as featured image.
As you can see in the image above, the Featured Image has been selected and it now appears in that bar. You also have the option to remove it totally or replace it.
COPYRIGHT IMAGES
Be careful when you use images, you don’t want to use images that are not copyright free.
So, you can sort this in two ways:
- Get images that are copyright free from websites that distribute such images.
- Design your own graphics to use in your article.
If you know any other way to overcome copyright, you are free to do so.
That is that on Step 5. Moving on…
Step 6: Article Categories and Tags
In this step, we’ll be discussing how you select the right Categories for your article and also using your Tags.
To do that, you will click on the SETTINGS icon, click on POST, then scroll down until you get to the part where you see CATEGORIES and TAGS.
Categories
When you click on Categories, it shows you all the categories in HabaNaija (e.g Football, Sports, Finance, Politics, Entertainment, etc.) All you need to do is select the right categories for your article. Note that you can select more than one category for your article.
Also, you might want to select the PREDICT AND WIN category no matter the context of your article.
Why?
Good question.
When you select the PREDICT AND WIN category, your article is going to show in the slider on HabaNaija Homepage. If you want that to happen, then you need to select that category.
Tags
Right beneath the Categories option, you will find the Tags option too. In this box, you only need to add words that are similar to what your article is all about.
Example; If your article were to be about a football game in the UEFA Champions League between Real Madrid and Manchester United, the tags you’ll be using might include Real Madrid, Manchester United, Football, Champion League, UEFA, Sports etc.
N.B.: When adding tags, you separate each word with a comma.
Step 7: SEO and Readability
Now, let’s talk about the SEO part of the article. When you scroll to the end of your article, you will find Yoast SEO.
Under the Yoast SEO, you’ll find the
- Focus Keyphrase
- Slug
- Meta Description
Focus Keyphrase
To fill in the Focus Keyphrase, you only need to repeat what you have in the title into the focus keyphrase. Copy the title of your article, then paste it into the focus keyphrase box.
Slug
For the Slug, it can be generated automatically on WordPress. Since your article has a title, and you have filled the Focus Keyphrase box, you can just click on “Save as Draft”.
Once that is done, the Slug will be provided automatically in its box.
Meta Description
The Meta Description is meant to be like a summary of what you have in the article. You will summarise the article by using words that appear in the article.
When you complete this, and the SEO and Readability of the article signals that they are good enough for publishing, then you can go ahead to hit the publish button.
