Grass is not always greener

Grass is not always greener

One of the Nigerian mentality is that the grass is always greener in Europe and so people who are there are getting on fine and leaving large. Yeah, this may be true to some extent but the fact that most Nigerians generalize this makes it sad.

I was having a chat with a friend, we both attended the same secondary school, instead of continuing her studies here, she was sent to Ukraine by her parents, now she has finished her university and she told me she’s in a hurry to return back to Nigeria to get a job. When she said this, I was shocked so I then asked why don’t you just get a job there? She told me foreigners are not allowed to work there, and even their own citizens find it hard to get a good job that the salary can pay the bills, she gave an example of nurses who are graduates and still earn around $50.

But the most intriguing part was when she told me she can’t also use that certificate to work in the UK as i later suggested to her, she said to use it in the UK, she would need to upgrade by going to school again in a better country. I was speechless after she told me this.

Knowing how foreign certificates turn Nigerian employers on, she has then decide to return home to get a job. But the thing she doesn’t know is, getting a job here isn’t going to be a walk in the park.

After all these, i then said to myself, there are lots of Nigerians who would wish they were in her shoes, not knowing how difficult life is there too, she also complained about the issue of Racism, which she said is still the order of the day over there, as black students in the universities are racially abused, but she said it’s mostly towards the guys and lesser on girls.

I told myself, the grass isn’t greener there after all, because at the end of the day schooling in Nigeria isn’t any different from over there.
