The past couple of years have not been good to Research In Motion and its BlackBerry devices. With Android and iOS devices dominating the market, RIM had no choice but to “up its game”. With Wednesday’s announcement of the new mobile operating system and new smartphones, the company had planned just that.

First, Research In Motion changed their name to its signature product – BlackBerry. “This is not the finish line; this is the starting line,” said the company’s chief executive, Thorsten Heins. It appears that the company wishes to start over. It’s not just all words, as the company claims that the new operating system has been re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented.

Along with the new operating system, BlackBerry 10, the company has also introduced two new smartphones that will obviously run on the OS. The full-touch BB10 smartphone is known as the BlackBerry Z10, while the one with a physical keyboard is called the BlackBerry Q10.
