The Book

Book 1: Fae or Foe? The Cracklock Saga

About The Author

C A Deegan lives in the East Midlands, right in the centre of the UK, and when he’s not writing or working, he’s with the family or walking the dog in the local woodlands with half an eye out for those ever-elusive Fae. The “Cracklock Saga” series of books came about from reading some pretty awful fairy books to his children over the years . But as he ground his way through these with gritted teeth, he always wondered what would happen if someone didn’t like fairies, what they would do about it, and could anybody stop them? This idea grew, and the Cracklocks were born.

Author’s interview

Question 1: Pitch your books to us (maximum of 100 words).

The Cracklocks are a family who, thanks to their rather unique ancestry, can see Faeries.  The main protagonists are a branch of the family who hate the Fae and do anything they can to rid our world of them.  They have actually found a way to destroy Faery itself and it falls to the “good” part of the family to try and stop them.  It’s action, magic, strange creatures and both the good and evil that people will do the whole way.

Question 2: What inspired you to write your book?

I’ve always read, and have been lucky enough to be selected to beta read for a few authors; going over their works before they publish as an extra set of eyes.  That’s really what made me start to wonder if I could do it myself.  Then, in early 2019 I met one of my favourite authors, Ricky Fleet at Comicon. It was something he said when I floated the idea of perhaps writing one myself.  “If you don’t have a go, you’ll never know.” I’d had the idea for the Cracklocks in all but name for a number of years, but it was in May 2019 that I started tentatively drafting the story arc. Took a while to get into the swing of it, but I am so pleased I did, because now I can’t stop!

Question 3: Who is your book for?

The series sits in a spot where Young Adults and Adults alike will enjoy it; certainly most of my readers so far are adults and they have been full of compliments for it.  The series would be Urban Fantasy if you want to categorise it.

Question 4: What do you hope the book will achieve?

I write for pleasure, always have.  If my stories can bring a little happiness to other people, then all the better.  I will continue to publish my series as I enjoy the writing process.

Question 5: Where can potential readers buy or download your book?

I’m exclusive to Amazon at the moment; you can get Book 1, “Fae or Foe” at

Question 6: Are you a first time author or have you written other books you want to tell us about?

Publishing wise, I am a mere fledgling writer, having had a few short stories published to date but always trying for more.  Check out other published works at:

The Cracklock Saga is my first real full length novel .

Question 7: Who is/are your favourite authors of all time?

So many books!  I would have to say Stephen King is my favourite; I collect his first editions.  But there are some excellent horror writers out there now as well, many of whom I am fortunate to call friends.

Question 8: Writing a book is a significant achievement. Do you have any tips for people who may want to write a book?

Just write! Have the confidence to do it, get it down and see what you’ve got.  You’ll look at it and think ‘trash’. Every writer does.  But don’t stop.  Fix the bits you don’t like, and have another look.  You’ll think ‘Yeah, this is alright.’  Find honest people to give you an opinion.  Believe in yourself and just write.

Question 9: Are you working on another project people should look out for in the future?

Yes.  As discussed above, Book 2 of the series, “The Lost and the Departed” will come out at the end of October 2021 and then Book 3 “Alice and the Mirror Glass” in Quarter 1 2022.  I am currently writing Book 4, “Dire Sorrows” which will also be released next year.  And then onto Book 5 of the series.
