A gigapixel camera has been invented! It is in fact said to be capable of a whopping 50 gigapixels, that is, 50,000 Mega pixels!! In fact, this is said to be 5 times better than 20/20 human vision…

It was developed by scientists in the US, at Duke University in North Carolina, lead by David Brady and Michael J. Fitzpatrick, and a team of scientists from the university of California, and the University of Arizona.

The actual prototype consists of 98 minature cameras, merged into a giant, a collosal  two-and-a-half feet lump, and too many inches deep (20, in case you wanted to know!).3% of the camera makes up the optical elements (lens, prism etcetera) and the rest consists of processors, microchips, anti-overheating components and lots of photosites!!

So how soon can we dream of owning a 50 gigapixel camera? According to scientists, as early as five years!!!Obviously, it will need to undergone a lot of minaturization…

Most cameras on the market range from 10 to 40 megapixels, although Canon sucessfully created a 120MP sensor. So 50 GP? Its a whopper! And (I cant imagine how much one of these would cost) in (as early as) 5 years (If you have a solid wallet) you could own a whopper like this…
