Falling Asleep Without Counting Sheep


Sleep is a naturally recurring state characterized by reduced or absent consciousness, relatively suspended sensory activity, and inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems.

Experts suggest that an individual should have a minimum of Six hours sleep each day. Not having enough sleep have been linked with Increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, risk for psychiatric conditions, depression, slow thinking, headache etc…

How Much Sleep We All Need:

Newborn babies from 0 – 2 months old – 12 – 18 Hours Sleep
Infants, 3 – 11 months old – 14 – 15 Hours Sleep
Toddlers, 1 – 3 years – 12 – 14 Hours Sleep
Preschoolers 3 – 5 years – 11 – 13 Hours Sleep
School aged children 5 – 10 years – 10 – 11 Hours Sleep
Teenagers 10 – 17 years – 8 – 9 Hours Sleep
Adults Above 18 years – 7 – 8 Hours Sleep

But sometimes, even after a stressful day at work, and you just want to sleep off, it could be difficult to sleep, here are some tips that could help you sleep easy.

1. Stop Thinking.

Most people are in the habit of thinking a lot when it’s time to sleep, they begin to make plans for the next day before they sleep and they do not know that, when your mind is not totally as peace, you won’t be able to sleep. So for sleep to come in, you must try to blank your mind.

2. Take Your Bath.

This isn’t compulsory, but to be able to sleep fast most times, you need to take a shower.

3. Be Comfortable.

Don’t try to fall asleep on the couch out of laziness, make sure you are dressed on an easy outfit that would free your body, ensure the temperature is perfect for you, then go to your bed and sleep. Always choose the right position that works best for you, whether you’re a hip, back, or stomach sleeper. Also, make sure your pillow is neither too flat nor too high because either may put strain on your neck.

4. Switch Off The Light.

Most people find it easier to sleep without the lights on, but if you are finding it difficult to sleep with the lights on, try and switch it off and see if it helps.

5. Play Slow Songs or “Blue”.

If you keep getting distracted by an annoying sound, play some slow songs or “blues” they would help calm you down as well. Also ambient noise like raindrops, running water, wind, or binaural beats are all sounds that help some people sleep. See if you can download a free app with these features.

6. Do Some “Boring” Things.

One Man’s meat is another Man’s poison, to some people reading is boring, and they often fall asleep when ever a pick up a book, you can try that. You can also play games like solitaire, cross word, sudden etc..

7. Put Pillow Between You Legs.

This is necessarily for people who can’t sleep without someone next to them, but putting a pillow between your legs would help reduce the stress or pain for those who have stomach or back pains.
