Haba NaijaKeymasterNigeria and China are two strong trading partners. From electronics and machinery to textiles and household goods, a large share of products in Nigerian markets come from China. Until recently, most of this trade was settled in US dollars. But things are changing—Nigeria and China are now working more with their own currencies, the naira and the yuan, instead of relying only on the dollar.
This shift makes sense for Nigerian businesses. Getting dollars can sometimes be difficult and expensive, but trading directly in yuan helps reduce those costs. With the currency swap agreement between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the People’s Bank of China, Nigerian importers can now get yuan from local banks, making payments to Chinese suppliers easier and faster.
For Chinese companies, accepting naira or yuan instead of dollars also simplifies transactions and strengthens trust in their own currency. It’s a win–win situation: Nigerian traders face less pressure from dollar shortages, while China boosts the global use of its yuan.
Of course, there are still challenges, such as making sure exchange rates remain stable and ensuring more businesses are confident enough to switch from dollars. But overall, this new approach opens the door to smoother trade, lower transaction costs, and stronger ties between Nigeria and China.
For Nigerian importers and exporters, the message is clear: keeping an eye on yuan–naira trading could bring real benefits in today’s changing global market.
Practical Tips for Nigerian Importers Trading in Yuan
Ask your bank about yuan access – Major Nigerian banks such as First Bank, Zenith, and Access Bank often participate in the CBN currency swap scheme. Inquire about opening yuan accounts or directly purchasing yuan.
Negotiate in yuan with suppliers – Many Chinese suppliers are open to receiving yuan instead of dollars. This can help you avoid high conversion fees and delays.
Compare exchange rates – Keep an eye on both the naira–yuan and naira–dollar rates. Sometimes, trading in yuan is cheaper and more stable.
Plan ahead for payments – Because yuan supply in Nigeria may be limited, it’s smart to order currency early, especially during peak import seasons.
Stay updated on CBN policies – The Central Bank occasionally reviews its swap arrangements. Being aware of new policies will help you take full advantage of them.
Of course, challenges remain—such as ensuring enough yuan supply and encouraging more traders to make the switch. But overall, this new approach opens the door to smoother trade, lower transaction costs, and stronger ties between Nigeria and China.
For Nigerian importers and exporters, the message is clear: keeping an eye on yuan–naira trading could bring real benefits in today’s changing global market.
